Fast acting oral laxatives

There a ton of oral laxatives that can provide fast relief for constipation patients. They all work differently and come with various side effects. However, prolonged usage of laxatives for constipation relief can result in chronic constipation.

Synthetic or Medical oral laxatives are grouped into the following:

  • Oral stimulants?

An example of oral stimulants is Dulcolax. Oral stimulants function by initiating rhythmic contractions of the muscles of the intestines. That is, they work by forcing the digestive tract to promote bowel movements. Long-term consumption of this type of laxatives can cause the discoloration of urine, burping, or nausea.

  • Rectal suppositories

Rectal suppositories work similarly as oral stimulants but specifically at the rectum. They pose the risks of diarrhea, rectal irritation, and cramping. An example of rectal suppositories is Pedia-Lax.

  • Rectal enemas

Rectal enemas are solutions of salt or water which are injected into the rectum through the anus. Through this process, they help to moisten the stools and encourage the movement of bowels. An example is glycerine.

  • Lubricant laxatives

Lubricant laxatives act as lubricants by reducing the friction between stools and the digestive walls. Lubricant laxatives contain mineral oil that creates a smooth layer for the smooth passage of stools. Due to the mineral oil content of these laxatives, it is strongly advised not to take mineral oil while using them. Moreover, using lubricant laxatives for long periods can lead to vitamin depletion in the intestine.

  • Oral osmotic laxatives

Osmotics function by pulling water into the colon for easier stool passage. Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is one example of an osmotic laxative. Side effects of osmotic laxatives include bloating, diarrhea, and cramping.

  • Stool softeners or Emollient laxatives

Stool softeners are another range of laxatives for constipation relief. They work by allowing moisture to pass to the stools to promote free stool passage. ?Prolonged use of oral stool softeners can lead to an imbalance of electrolytes. Surfak and Colace are examples of oral stool softeners.

  • Bulk formers

Bulk-forming laxatives work almost the same way as stool softeners. They help in relieving constipation by absorbing water into the stools to make soft and bulky stools. And just like osmotic laxatives, long-term use of bulk formers can cause bloating, abdominal cramps, or even chronic constipation.

  • Guanylate Cyclase-C Agonist laxatives

Agonist laxatives work by allowing more water into the intestines thereby, promoting bowel movement. This type of laxatives can provide a fast relief for chronic constipation. An example is Trulance (Plecanatide). A word of caution though, kids younger than six years old are not supposed to take Agonist laxatives. In addition, these laxatives can lead to diarrhea and increased thirst.

  • Laxatives combination

There are also laxatives which are a combination of the different types listed above. An example is a combination of an osmotic and a stimulant. However, combination laxatives don?t necessarily perform better than single-type laxatives.

Laxatives that works within an hour

While most laxatives should take about at least an hour after consumption before proper bowel movement begins there are a few others that can relieve constipation within an hour. Some of these fast-acting laxatives include:

  • Rectal enemas and suppositories

Rectal enemas and suppositories help to relieve constipation within 30 minutes. They are fast acting and may cause farting and abdominal cramps.

  • Baking soda

The use of baking soda for relieving constipation is an immediate treatment which has been known to many households for a long time. To consume baking soda for constipation, you need to add a little quantity of the powder into a glass of warm water, and then drink.

As much as the immediate effectiveness of baking soda, it is strongly not recommended for constant use as it can lead to damaging effects.

  • Cascara tea

Cascara tea has strong laxative properties that make it a fast cure for constipation and its symptoms.

What to do when constipated on the toilet

If you have constipation, get into a squatting position while in the toilet. You can achieve this by bringing a small footrest and standing on it instead of sitting on the toilet seat.

You can also ease constipation by massaging the belly.

If all your options fails, please don’t shy? away from seeing your doctor.
