  • Natural Herbal Treatment For Eye Pain, Burning Eyes And Itchy Eyes Infection

It is a common saying that, ?the eyes are the windows of the body.? This is quite a true fact as the eyes are very delicate organs of the body coupled with the fact that they are almost left unprotected. It is no wonder everyone (or almost everyone) tries to take good care of their eyes.

Chances are that you [reading this] must have felt pain in your eyes at one time or another.? The pain may be due to an infection or it may be a symptom of another health problem. Whichever the cause, it is imperative that prompt remedial actions are taken in order to cure the pain. That said, this article will focus on natural home remedies for eye pain.

What is eye pain?

Eye pain, or ophthalmalgia, is an eye condition that is marked by pain in and/or around the eyes. This condition involves a feeling of discomfort in the eyes and may be caused by various reasons. Other characteristics of eye pain include a burning sensation, or itching of the eyes.

As already mentioned, eye pain can affect the inside of the eyes or around the surface of the eye. Eye pain that affects only the surface is called ocular pain, while it is referred to as orbital pain when it happens within the eye.

Ocular pain is mostly as a result of a foreign object ? like dirt ? in the eyes, or due to an infection. Eye drops are commonly used in treating such kinds of eye pain. Orbital pain, on the other hand, is characterized by a stabbing or sharp pain within the eye. Orbital eye pain may need intensive eye treatment.

While in most cases, the eye pain should dissipate over time, there are also instances where eye pain may lead to vision loss. In such cases, the eye pain is caused by a serious health condition and the person affected needs to visit an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.

Causes of eye pain

We?ve already established one fact about the cause of ocular pain: foreign objects or eye infections are the usual culprits.

Other causes of eye pain include:

  • Conjunctivitis or pinkeye

The relaxing effect of the gel/juice on the eyes can help to reduce any swelling or bulging in the eyes. To make use of aloe vera for the purpose of treating eye pain, dilute fresh aloe vera gel in water and using a cotton swab, apply the gel on the eyelid. Leave the gel on the eyes for about 10 minutes before washing off.

  • Bael leaves

The leaves of the Bilva tree, also known as Bael, have been known for their medicinal properties. For instance, the leaves contain tannins, which are responsible for the plant?s antibacterial properties. This helps in curing eye pain and its symptoms by destroyin any infection-causing bacterium in the eyes.

  • Sesame flowers

Sesame flowers are renowned for their plethora of medicinal properties, including their use in treating eye pain and its symptoms. For this method, grind some fresh sesame flowers and mix with a little amount of water to form a paste. Mix the paste with a glass of boiled cow?s milk and drink once every day. You can also directly apply the paste on the eyelids for more effect.

  • Carrot juice

We all know the great, nourishing effect of eating carrots. Carrots are packed with vital minerals and vitamins such as vitamins A, E, K, and the B vitamins. While vitamin A is essential for good eye sight, vitamin E helps in treating itching and burning in the eyes. Thus, eating carrots, or drinking two glasses of carrot juice every day is a natural way of treating and preventing eye pain.

  • Cucumber

Placing refrigerated cucumber slices on eyes can also help to get rid of eye pain and its symptoms. Cucumber works in this way due to its anti-irritation and soothing properties. Symptoms of eye pain such as bulging of the eyes can be reduced by placing cucumber slices on the affected eye.

  • Cold compress

Itching eyes or burning eyes can be treated with a cold compress. Eye pain caused by eye allergies or infections can be remedied by applying a cold compress over the affected eye(s).

To make a cold compress,

  1. Dip a cloth in cold water and place on the eyes after wringing.
  2. Leave the cloth on the eyes for about 5 minutes and repeat the process several times.

Another way of doing this is by putting some ice cubes in a cotton towel and placing on the eyes.

  • Warm compress

Eye pain due to a sty or blepharitis can be treated using a warm compress.

Blepharitis is the inflammation of the eyelids while sty is an infection of the sebaceous gland of the eyelid. A sty can cause a blockage of the sebaceous gland which causes pain in the eye. Dealing with these root causes will definitely stop the eye pain.

To make a warm compress, you need;

  1. to soak a washcloth in warm water and squeeze, and then
  2. place the warm cloth over the eyelids.
  3. Repeat this process three more times with different washcloths and continue until the eye pain subsides.
  • Eyebright/Euphrasia

Eyebright, or euphrasia, is a well-known herb for treating eye diseases. This herbal plant works by fighting off any infection-causing organism in the eyes. You can apply euphrasia eye drops to the eyes or wash the eyes using eyebright solution prepared by straining a mixture of one teaspoon of the plant and a cup of boiled water.

  • Eye massage

Eye pain can also be caused when you stare for so long at a computer screen. Massaging the eyes gently will help to relax the strained muscles as well as alleviate the pain. In addition, this helps to cure eye pain that is caused by a migraine. Note: if the eye pain is as a result of foreign particles in the eyes, do not use this method as it may cause more damage to the eyes.

  • Coriander

Coriander is used in Ayurveda for treating various eye conditions. The acerbic properties of the herb helps in bringing relief to eye pain patients. Get some fresh coriander leaves and grind to get its juice. Use an eye dropper to suck the clear juice and apply to the eyes. This process should be done two times daily until the pain lessens or goes away completely.

  • Epsom salt

The soothing effect of Epsom salt is beneficial to persons suffering from eye pain.

Pour a teaspoon of Epsom salt in half a cup of hot water, then, dip a cotton ball when the mixture slightly cools and place on the eyes. Leave the cotton ball on the eyes for about 5 minutes and rinse with cool water afterward.

  • Rose water

Rose water is normally used for treating eye sores. This solution can also be used for relieving eye pain. Soak a ball of cotton in cold rose water and place on the eyelids after squeezing. Leave the cotton ball on the eyelids for about 15 minutes before taking it off. Repeat the process twice each day for best results.

  • Flush with water

We already stated that eye pain may be caused by a foreign object in the eyes. If this is the case, then, flushing the eyes with distilled warm water will help to get rid of the foreign body. You can also add a little salt to the water. It is important to note that the water must be distilled or chemically clean as any other water may contain impurities.

  • Honey

A drop of honey can do wonders to a paining eye. The soothing effect of honey coupled with its antioxidant properties helps to reduce itching or burning sensation associated with eye pain. Moreover, the antibacterial and detoxifying properties of honey can help in preventing eye pain.

  • Castor oil

Castor oil is a common ingredient in many eye care products like eye drops. The combination of castor oil?s antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties helps to destroy any disease-causing organism in the eyes. To alleviate pain in the eyes, use a dropper to dribble one drop of castor oil into each eye before going to bed at night. This should be done every night and also during the day until the pain goes away.

  • Blink more often

Staring at a screen for so long can leave the eyes tired. Blinking the eyes more often when using a screen can help to prevent eye pain. A common method to help you remember to blink is the 20/20/20 rule. This rule recommends that when using a computer screen or a smartphone for long, stare away from the screen and focus on one object that is at a minimum distance of 20 feet from you for at least 20 seconds. This should be repeated every 20 minutes.

With all being said, it is important that you see a doctor immediately when you notice that the eye pain is not reducing.
